Make "Failure Is Not An Option" Work For You, Not Against
Use a Holistic Framework for achieving ambitious goals while protecting your health, relationships, and well-being.
This week, I had one of those conversations that shifts your entire perspective.
I met with a colleague from my business networking group—someone in his early 60s who’s built an incredibly successful career over decades. When I asked him what keeps him going, what helps him continue to set and achieve new goals after all these years, his answer was elegantly simple:
“Failure is not an option.”
You’ve probably heard this before. Maybe you’ve even said it to yourself when facing a crucial deadline, a daunting challenge, or a goal that feels just beyond your reach. It’s a powerful mantra—one that’s helped countless people push through obstacles, overcome self-doubt, and accomplish things they never thought possible.
There’s real power in that level of commitment and determination.
But here’s what struck me as he spoke: as someone who has dedicated my career and life to health, wellness, and sustainable well-being—both as a Thai massage therapist and teacher—I couldn’t help but notice something lurking beneath those inspiring words.
The shadow side.
When Motivation Becomes Toxic
Let me be clear: I’m not saying “failure is not an option” is a bad message. Not at all.
But depending on how you integrate it into your life, it can become toxic. It can lead you down a path where you:
Burn yourself out by pushing past healthy limits
Sacrifice relationships you didn’t intend to give up
Ignore your body’s signals until minor issues become major health problems
Miss the warning signs that you need rest, support, or a different approach
Keep pushing even when you’re already burnt out, creating cascading problems in your physical, mental, and emotional health
I’ve seen it happen. Maybe you’ve experienced it yourself—that moment when you realize you’ve achieved something important, but the cost was higher than you wanted to pay.
So the question becomes: How do we work with this powerful intention in a way that’s actually healthy and sustainable? How do we pursue our goals with determination without sacrificing the very things that make those goals meaningful?
This is where the Wheel of Healing and Vitality comes in.
Introducing the Wheel of Healing and Vitality
I created this framework years ago to help my clients -and myself- overcome injuries, grow as individuals, accomplish their goals, and live better lives—all while staying healthy and whole.
Think of it like a bicycle wheel. It has three essential parts that work together:
The Center Hub (where everything revolves around)
The Spokes (the inner circle that connects and supports)
The Outer Rim (the circle that makes contact with the world)
Each part plays a crucial role when you want to accomplish goals in the healthiest way possible. Let me walk you through each one.
The Center Hub: Loving Kindness & Consistency in Action
This is your foundation—the core principle that everything else revolves around.
The shadow side of “failure is not an option” is that we keep taking consistent action, pushing ourselves forward relentlessly, but without enough regard for being kind to ourselves. We ignore the signals when we hit walls, when we’re exhausted, when we’re on the road to burning out (or already burnt out).
Here’s the balanced approach: Yes, take consistent action toward your goals. But do it with loving kindness toward yourself and others.
What does this look like in practice?
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, recognize it. Don’t just push through. Instead:
Take a short walk to reset
Place your hands on your heart for a few breaths and invite in self-compassion
Practice gratitude—think of things you’re thankful for and proud of
Give yourself permission to focus on just one core aspect of your goal today while releasing the rest
Sometimes loving kindness means taking a day off from your goal, or maintaining one small element while giving yourself space for rest and recovery.
This isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. It’s recognizing that sustainable success requires periods of both action and restoration.
The Spokes: Your Daily Wellness Practices
These are your practical tools—the specific actions you can take throughout your day, everyday to stay healthy while pursuing your goals. When you’re pushing forward and noticing it’s causing stress, distress, or pain in your body, these are the practices that help you course-correct.
1. Massage & Self-Massage
If pushing toward your goal is causing tension or pain in your body, it’s time to get a massage or learn some self-massage techniques you can use regularly.
Don’t wait until that shoulder pain becomes chronic or that tight lower back turns into a serious injury. Address it proactively.
2. Myofascial Yoga
Fascia is the connective tissue network in your body—I call it the scaffolding. It supports everything you do physically. When fascia gets tight and restricted, it affects your entire body.
Myofascial yoga specifically targets this tissue. One simple tool I recommend: miracle balls. They’re about the size of a softball but soft enough to lay on comfortably.
Place them on your lower back, hips, or behind your shoulders and rest there for 30-60 seconds. This resets and releases deep tension that stretching alone can’t reach.
3. Dynamic Stretching
Maybe your goal has you so focused that you’re not moving your body enough. Or perhaps you’re exercising—lifting weights for energy—but you’re getting stiff and tight because you’re not stretching.
Dynamic stretching keeps your body flexible, resilient, and ready for whatever your goals demand of you.
4. Strength & Core Building
Your physical foundation matters. Building strength and core stability doesn’t just prevent injury—it gives you more energy and capacity to pursue your goals with vigor.
5. Mindfulness & Present-Moment Awareness
Here’s where things get interesting.
When you have a fixed “failure is not an option” goal, it typically engages a very left-brain, task-oriented approach. You’re focused on the future, on what needs to get done, on the outcome you’re driving toward.
Mindfulness teaches something different: Getting in touch with the present moment.
And here’s the paradox—when you learn to be present, you actually access more energy. Energy lives in every moment, not in some future achievement. Mindfulness trains you to welcome feelings of peacefulness, love, compassion, and support that fuel sustainable success.
It also helps you let go of rigid attachment to exactly how things should look, creating space for better outcomes than you might have imagined.
6. Healthy Consumption
This is the foundation: sleep, nutrition, hydration.
If you’re not eating well, sleeping enough, or taking care of your basic needs while pursuing your goals, it catches up to you. Every time. Your body keeps score, and eventually, the bill comes due.
Make healthy consumption non-negotiable, not something you sacrifice for productivity.
The Outer Rim: Nature & Community
The outer wheel—the part that makes contact with the world—consists of two powerful elements that we often neglect when we’re laser-focused on our goals.
Nature
We get so narrow in our vision, so consumed by our objectives, that we forget the restorative power of simply being outside. Or we reserve being in nature with vacations and special occasions.
Go for walks- without your earbuds. Put your intentions out into nature and the universe. Ask for support as you work toward your goals. Let the natural world remind you that you’re part of something larger.
Sometimes the answers we’re desperately seeking come when we stop grinding and start walking.
Community
Ask for help. Seriously.
Share what you’re trying to accomplish with friends and family. Talk about your obstacles. Ask for support, advice, or simply a listening ear.
And sometimes? Just let go of your goals entirely for an evening and go have fun with people you care about.
When you return to your goals afterward, you’ll often find you have renewed energy, fresh perspective, and a deeper sense of “I got this.”
We’re not meant to do this alone. Community isn’t a luxury—it’s essential fuel for sustainable achievement.
Putting It All Together: A Holistic Formula for Sustainable Success
Here’s what I want you to understand:
Ambitious goals are beautiful. Pushing yourself to grow, achieve, and contribute is admirable. “Failure is not an option” can absolutely be a powerful motivator that drives you to extraordinary accomplishments.
But if you integrate that mantra using the Wheel of Healing and Vitality—if you balance drive with self-compassion, action with rest, focus with presence, and individual effort with community support—you’ll achieve your goals in a completely different way.
You’ll get there:
Without burning out
Without sacrificing your health or relationships
Without ignoring the signals your body and mind are sending you
With more energy, joy, and vitality along the way
You’ll succeed not just in reaching your destination, but in who you become in the process.
And honestly? That’s the real goal anyway.
Your Turn: How Will You Integrate This?
